Looking after your sexual health is simple when you build it into your routine. A few steps can protect you and the people you have sex with.
Introduction
Sexual health is more than avoiding infections. It is about feeling safe, respected and in control of your choices. These steps are a good place to start.
If you are not sure what is right for you, ask at your clinic. The team can build a plan with you.
Everyday steps
- Use condoms with new partners, and use enough lubricant
- Test regularly, especially when you change partners
- Ask about vaccines, including hepatitis B and HPV
- Talk to your partners about testing and boundaries
Know your options
PrEP can stop HIV before sex. PEP can stop it after a possible exposure, if you start within 72 hours. Contraception is free from sexual health clinics, including emergency contraception.
Look after your wellbeing
Sleep, food, exercise and good friends all help. If you feel low or anxious about sex or your relationships, tell your clinic team or your GP.
Check in with yourself
Ask yourself if you feel safe and happy with your sex life. If the answer is no, or you are not sure, talk to someone you trust or to your clinic team. There is no wrong time to ask for help.
Small habits add up. Your clinic can help with each of these steps. Come back whenever your situation changes, for example when you start a new relationship, or when you have not tested for a year.
